Tallinn’s #1 car interior cleaning company
Car ozone treatment
Auto Sisepuhastus treats cars with ozone in an enclosed booth at our Mustamäe workshop, serving Tallinn and Harju County. As part of our odour removal service, ozone treatment addresses residual smells in seat foam, the headliner and ventilation ducts after the source of the odour has been found and removed.
Our generator produces 5 grams of ozone per hour. Treatment takes 35 minutes in the enclosed booth, and we hand the car back only after the interior air measures below 0.05 ppm. By the end of 2025, we had treated 1,389 cars in the booth; 184 ozone-treatment job sheets were completed in 2025.

When does a car need ozone treatment?
The smell comes back with the heat
A parked car may smell clean while cold, only for the odour to return 10 minutes after the heating comes on or the car stands in the sun. Odour trapped in the seat foam and headliner fabric is released by warmth, so surface cleaning or an air freshener may help for only a few days.
The smell intensifies when the fan is turned on
If the smell gets stronger when the fan is turned up, it may be trapped in the air-conditioning ducts or evaporator. A surface spray cannot reach those parts; a gas or mist follows the airflow into them.
Smoke or pet odour from a previous owner
A used car can still smell of smoke or pets after the ashtray is emptied and the dog hair vacuumed away. If the odour persists after two weeks and the seats and carpets have been washed, ozone treatment may be the next step.
How ozone breaks down odours
Ozone is an unstable molecule of three oxygen atoms. It oxidises odour-causing compounds, including tar compounds in smoke, sulphur and nitrogen compounds from urine, and volatile compounds from mould. This breaks them into smaller, odourless components rather than covering one smell with another.
As a gas, ozone reaches upholstery foam and air-conditioning ducts that liquid cleaners cannot. Its oxidising action can also affect rubber and soft plastics; repeated treatments can dry out door seals and cause fine cracks. We therefore use ozone for a specific odour problem, not as routine maintenance.

How car ozone treatment works
Find the source and prepare the car
We first check that the source of the smell has been removed. We lift the carpets, measure moisture in the underlay and inspect the interior air filter, which can release odour when the fan starts. We remove the customer's belongings and textiles, warm the car in the booth, and place the generator on a rubber mat in the centre of the rear seat.
Treat the car in an enclosed booth
We switch off the booth's exhaust ventilation, set the interior fan to a medium recirculation setting and connect a battery charger to keep the fan running steadily. The ozone generator runs on a 35-minute timer. A warning sign is placed on the booth door, and the technician watches through the glass; nobody enters while ozone levels are high.
Ventilate and measure the remaining ozone
After treatment, we ventilate the booth and open every car door for two hours while the remaining ozone breaks down. Before handover, we measure the interior air and record the reading on the job sheet. The car is returned only below 0.05 ppm, with neither the original odour nor the sharp smell of ozone detectable.

Ozone treatment during Tallinn's damp autumn and winter
Tallinn's average relative humidity is 85% in October and 89% in November. Wet shoes and clothing can leave a parked car damp overnight, bringing old odours back. Because ozone breaks down faster in humid air, we treat cars only in a heated booth at 20 °C. In winter, we warm cars brought from Harju County until the windows are dry before starting.
Car ozone treatment: price and time
Odour removal with an ozone generator costs from 38 euros and one ozone treatment visit lasts a total of 3 hours: 25 minutes are spent on checking and preparing the source, 35 minutes on processing in a closed booth, and 2 hours on ventilation and ozone residual measurement. In order to eliminate the source of the smell, ozone treatment is added to mould and moisture odour removal from 85 euros, pet odour removal with enzyme cleaning from 65 euros or complete removal of smoke odour from 250 euros, car drop-off at the Mustamäe workshop is free, and collection and return within Tallinn costs a total of 24 euros.

Two-cycle ozone treatment for food odour near Tallinn Läänemere Gymnasium
Car owner: Tõnu H., logistics manager of a catering company. Where did the car come from: Near Tallinn Läänemere High School, Lasnamäe.
1. Inspection and preparation of the source: the thermal boxes and company belongings were taken out of the interior, the moisture reading of the underlay beneath the carpet was 11 percent, the interior air filter was checked and the cold car warmed up to 20 °C in the booth.
2. Processing in a closed booth: the generator stood on a rubber mat in the middle of the back seat and worked with a timer for 35 minutes, there was a warning sign on the door of the booth, and the technician watched the work from behind the glass.
3. Ventilation and ozone residual measurement: after 2 hours of ventilation, the ozone reading went to the job sheet and the car spent the night in a locked and heated garage.
4. Second cycle: the next business day, the same 3-hour visit was made again, because after the first cycle, more odour molecules were released from the deeper layers of the foam padding of the car that transported hot food every business day for 4 years.
Cost: odour removal with an ozone generator, two cycles: 2 × €38; car drop-off at the Mustamäe workshop, the company driver dropped off the car: 1 × 0 €. The total amount of job sheet No. 15,912 including VAT is €76 and the company paid by bank transfer based on this invoice.
Project time in 2026: 6 hours of work on two consecutive business days. Each of the two 3-hour ozone treatment visits consisted of 25 minutes of preparation, 35 minutes of treatment, and 2 hours of ventilation. The car spent the night in the workshop between cycles and returned to the company on the afternoon of the second business day.
What changed: After the second cycle, the smell of food does not enter the interior even 10 minutes after turning on the heating.
Frequently asked questions
Is ozone dangerous for humans?
In high concentration, ozone irritates the respiratory tract, therefore no person or animal is present in the booth during the treatment, and the car is handed over only after 2 hours of ventilation and measurement. A car handed over with a reading of less than 0.05 ppm is immediately ready for driving. The average of the transfer readings written on the job sheets was 0.021 ppm by the end of 2025.
Does Ozone treatment Damage Leather or Rubber Seals?
One 35-minute cycle will not damage leather, fabric or seals. ozone treatment, repeated dozens of times, dries the rubber and makes fine cracks. Therefore, we do not recommend ozone treatment for every interior wash, and on cars with leather seats, we check after the treatment that the leather has not dried out.
How many times should ozone treatment be repeated?
One cycle is enough for a car with the odour source removed. In the case of a strong odour that has accumulated for years, we do a second cycle the next day, because after the first cycle, more odour molecules are released from the deeper layers of the foam padding, and the second cycle costs the same 38 euros. Of the 1,389 cars ozonated by the end of 2025, 112 or 8.1 percent received the second cycle.
Can I wait in the workshop during ozone treatment?
Yes, there is a coffee machine and Wi-Fi in the customer area of the workshop. A car dropped off at our Mustamäe workshop in the morning is ready that afternoon after a 3-hour visit. We also pick up the car ourselves: pick-up and return costs a total of 24 euros within Tallinn, 1.02 euros per kilometre in each direction outside Tallinn.
